Do Canadians Need a Visa or ETIAS for Europe?
Canadian travelers visiting the Schengen Area will need ETIAS authorization from Q4 2026.
ETIAS Required
Canadians currently travel to Europe visa-free. From late 2026, ETIAS authorization will be required. It costs €20, is valid for 3 years, and most applications are approved in minutes.
How to Apply for ETIAS
- 1
Visit the official portal
Go to travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. The portal is expected to open Summer 2026.
- 2
Complete the application
Provide your passport details, travel plans, and answer security questions. Takes about 10 minutes.
- 3
Pay the fee
€20 for adults aged 18-70. Free for children under 18 and seniors over 70.
- 4
Receive your ETIAS
Most applications are approved within minutes. ETIAS is linked to your passport electronically.
The 90/180-Day Rule for Canadians
Even with ETIAS, Canadians must follow the 90/180-day rule: you can stay a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across all 30 Schengen countries combined. Days in France, Germany, and Spain all count toward the same limit.
The window "rolls" — it's always calculated by looking back 180 days from today. This is more restrictive than a simple calendar period. Use our 90/180-day calculator to track your remaining days.
