What you need to apply

A Simple Application

Unlike a Schengen Visa, ETIAS requires minimal documents. There is no need for bank statements, hotel bookings, or employment letters. You will only need a few basic items to complete your application online.

Required Documents

  • Valid passport — From an ETIAS-eligible country, meeting passport requirements (see below)
  • Email address — Where you will receive your ETIAS confirmation
  • Payment method — Credit or debit card for the €20 fee

Passport Requirements

Validity 3+ months After planned departure from Schengen
Issue Date Within 10 years At time of entry
Type Machine-readable Biometric preferred
Condition Undamaged No torn pages or water damage

Information You Will Provide

During the application, you will enter the following details directly into the online form:

Personal Information

  • Full name (as shown on passport)
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Nationality/citizenship
  • Contact details (email, phone, address)

Passport Details

Background Questions

The ETIAS form includes security screening questions about your health history, criminal record, previous immigration issues, and travel to certain regions. Answer honestly — your responses are cross-checked against security databases.

What You DO NOT Need

ETIAS is significantly simpler than a Schengen Visa. Unlike the visa application, you will not need to provide:

Not Required for ETIAS

  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings)
  • Return flight tickets
  • Bank statements or proof of funds
  • Travel insurance documents
  • Passport photos

Document FAQs

What if my passport expires soon?
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area. If it expires sooner, renew it before applying for ETIAS.
Can I use an expired passport to apply?
No. You must use a valid passport. ETIAS is linked to your passport, so you will need a new ETIAS if you get a new passport.
What if my name changed since my passport was issued?
The name on your ETIAS must match your passport exactly. If your passport has your old name, apply for ETIAS using that name. If you have updated your passport, use the new details.
I have dual citizenship. Which passport should I use?
If you have EU citizenship, travel with your EU passport — you do not need ETIAS. Otherwise, apply using the passport you will present at the border. Each ETIAS is linked to a specific passport.
Do I need a biometric passport?
Biometric passports are preferred but not required. Any machine-readable passport from an ETIAS-eligible country will work.
