ETIAS Validity
How long is ETIAS valid?
An approved ETIAS is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires โ whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries for stays up to 90 days.
Key Validity Facts
How Long Does ETIAS Last?
Your ETIAS authorization is valid for 3 years from the date of approval, OR until your passport expires โ whichever comes first.
For example, if your passport expires in 2 years but you get ETIAS approval today, your ETIAS will only be valid for 2 years, not 3.
New Passport = New ETIAS
What ETIAS Allows
- Multiple entries โ Enter and exit the Schengen Area as many times as you want
- Any Schengen country โ Visit any of the 30 Schengen and associated countries
- Tourism, business, transit โ For short-term visits of any purpose
- 90-day stays โ Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period
The 90/180 Day Rule
Even though your ETIAS is valid for 3 years, you can only stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. This is a rolling calculation โ not a calendar year.
Use our Schengen Calculator to track your allowed days and plan your trips accordingly. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and future travel bans.
Validity Comparison
| Feature | Validity | Max Stay |
|---|---|---|
| ETIAS (Europe) | 3 years | 90 days / 180 days |
| ESTA (USA) | 2 years | 90 days per visit |
| UK ETA | 2 years | 6 months per visit |
| Canada eTA | 5 years | 6 months per visit |
| Australia ETA | 1 year | 3 months per visit |
Renewing ETIAS
ETIAS cannot be "renewed" โ when it expires, you simply apply for a new one. There's no early renewal option or advantage to applying before your current ETIAS expires.
We recommend applying for your new ETIAS at least 72 hours before your next trip to Europe, just as you would for a first-time application.
