Schengen Transit Visa

Last verified: 3 min read

For airport layovers in the Schengen Area

What is an Airport Transit Visa?

The Airport Transit Visa (ATV) — sometimes called a Type A visa — allows you to pass through the international transit area of a Schengen airport without entering the Schengen Area. It's only needed by citizens of certain countries.

If you're not from one of the ATV-required countries, you can transit through Schengen airports freely without any visa, as long as you stay in the international zone and don't pass through immigration.

Do You Need a Transit Visa?

Most travelers do NOT need a transit visa — you can pass through Schengen airports without any visa if you stay in the international transit area.

An Airport Transit Visa is only required for citizens of about 12 countries, including:

Countries Requiring Transit Visa (Schengen-wide)

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Eritrea
  • Ethiopia
  • Ghana
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • Somalia
  • Sri Lanka

Country-Specific Lists

Individual Schengen countries may have additional countries on their transit visa list. For example, France requires transit visas for more nationalities than other countries. Check the specific requirements for the airport you're transiting through.

When You DON'T Need a Transit Visa

Even citizens of ATV-required countries may be exempt if they hold:

  • A valid Schengen visa (any type)
  • A valid visa or residence permit from an EU country, Canada, Japan, USA, or several other countries
  • A diplomatic or service passport

If you already have a regular Schengen visa, you don't need an additional transit visa — you can transit freely (and even leave the airport if you wish).

Transit Visa vs Regular Visa

Transit Visa (Type A):

  • Only allows staying in the airport transit zone
  • Cannot leave the airport
  • Cannot enter the Schengen Area
  • For connecting flights only

Regular Visa (Type C):

  • Allows entry into the Schengen Area
  • Can leave the airport, go sightseeing, stay overnight
  • More flexibility for layovers

If you want to leave the airport during a long layover (e.g., to visit the city or stay in a hotel), you need a regular Schengen visa, not a transit visa.

How to Apply

The application process is similar to other Schengen visas:

  • Apply at the embassy of the country you'll transit through
  • Provide passport, photos, and completed application form
  • Show confirmed connecting flight ticket
  • Provide evidence of final destination visa (if required)

Processing typically takes 15 days.

Transit Visa FAQs

Can I leave the airport with a transit visa?
No. A transit visa only allows you to stay in the international transit zone. If you want to leave the airport (even briefly), you need a regular Schengen visa.
What if my layover is overnight?
If you have a transit visa, you must stay in the airport. Some airports have transit hotels airside. If you need to leave the airport to stay in a hotel, apply for a regular Schengen visa instead.
Do I need a transit visa for every Schengen airport?
If your nationality requires a transit visa, you'll need one for any Schengen airport you transit through. If transiting through multiple Schengen airports on one journey, a single transit visa should suffice.
My nationality isn't on the list — can I transit freely?
Most likely yes. If you're not from an ATV-required country, you can transit through Schengen airports without a visa as long as you stay in the transit area and don't pass through immigration.
I have a US visa — do I still need a transit visa?
If you hold a valid US visa (or visa from certain other countries like Canada, Japan, or an EU country), you're typically exempt from the transit visa requirement even if your nationality is on the list.
