Understanding the Map

When looking at the Schengen map, keep these distinctions in mind:

  • Full Schengen members (dark blue): 27 countries with complete border-free travel
  • Partial members (light blue): Bulgaria and Romania — Schengen for air/sea, but land borders still have checks
  • Not in Schengen (gray): UK, Ireland, and most of Eastern Europe/Balkans

Countries Shown on the Map

  • Western Europe: France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg
  • Southern Europe: Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Malta
  • Northern Europe: Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Iceland
  • Central Europe: Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia
  • Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania
  • Other: Croatia, Liechtenstein, Bulgaria (partial), Romania (partial)

Not Shown as Schengen

The United Kingdom and Ireland are not part of the Schengen Area. The UK left the EU and has its own ETA system. Ireland opted out of Schengen to maintain its Common Travel Area with the UK. Both require separate entry authorization.
