European Transit Airports

Guides to major airports for layovers and connections.

Transit Rules Vary by Airport

European airports do not all follow the same transit rules. At Schengen Area airports, connecting passengers may need to pass through immigration even for airside connections, depending on whether they arrive from or depart to a non-Schengen destination. Some airports have dedicated transit zones that allow passengers to connect without clearing border control, while others require all arriving passengers to enter the country.

The distinction matters because Airport Transit Visa (ATV) requirements vary by nationality. Travelers from certain countries need an ATV even if they never leave the transit zone. Individual Schengen member states can also add nationalities to the EU-wide ATV list, meaning the same traveler may need a transit visa at one airport but not another.

Our airport guides cover terminal layouts, transit zone availability, minimum connection times, and visa requirements for each hub — so you can plan your layover with confidence.

Airport Transit FAQs

Do I need a visa for a layover in Europe?
It depends on your nationality and whether you leave the transit zone. Most visa-exempt nationalities (such as US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens) can transit without a visa. However, some nationalities need an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) even to stay airside.
What is a Schengen transit zone?
A Schengen transit zone is a secure area within the airport where connecting passengers can wait for their next flight without clearing immigration. It is available at most major Schengen airports, though not all airports have one.
Can I leave the airport during a layover?
If you exit the transit zone, you enter the Schengen Area and need proper authorization — either a valid visa or, once it launches, an approved ETIAS. Some smaller airports do not have transit zones at all, which means all passengers must clear immigration regardless of their connection plans.
