Visiting the UK in 2026
The UK has its own immigration system, separate from Schengen. Visa-exempt travelers need the UK ETA (mandatory from 25 February 2026), while others need a UK visa. Your requirements depend on nationality.
UK is NOT Part of the Schengen Area
The UK has its own immigration system. A Schengen visa does not allow entry to the UK, and a UK visa does not allow entry to Schengen countries. You need separate authorization for each.

Planning a Trip to Both UK and Europe?
Many travelers combine a UK visit with European destinations. Remember:

- You need both if visiting both regions
- Ireland has the Common Travel Area with the UK — no ETA needed if traveling between them
UK Travel FAQs
Is the UK part of the Schengen Area?
No. The UK has never been part of the Schengen Area. It has its own immigration system with the UK ETA for visa-exempt travelers and UK visas for others.
Do I need both UK ETA and ETIAS?
If you're visiting both the UK and Schengen countries, yes. UK ETA covers the United Kingdom only, while ETIAS covers the 30 Schengen Area countries. They are separate systems.
Can I use my Schengen visa to enter the UK?
No. A Schengen visa is not valid for UK entry. You need either a UK ETA (if visa-exempt) or a UK visa (if visa-required) to enter the United Kingdom.
What about Northern Ireland?
Northern Ireland is part of the UK. If you're flying directly to Northern Ireland, you need UK authorization. However, there are no immigration checks on the land border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Do I need UK ETA to transit through a UK airport?
It depends on your nationality and whether you need to pass through UK border control. If you can stay airside (international transit area) at Heathrow or Manchester, most nationalities don't need an ETA for transit.
