UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Everything you need to know about the UK ETA system.
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is required for visa-exempt travelers visiting the United Kingdom. It's separate from ETIAS, which covers Schengen countries.
What is the UK ETA?
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital travel permission required for visa-exempt visitors to the United Kingdom. It's similar to the US ESTA or the upcoming ETIAS for Europe.
The UK ETA allows multiple entries over its 2-year validity, with stays of up to 6 months per visit. Unlike the Schengen Area's rolling 90/180 day rule, the UK calculates stay limits per individual visit.

What If My UK ETA Is Denied?
If your UK ETA application is refused, you will receive a notification explaining the reason. Common reasons include:
- Criminal history that makes you ineligible
- Previous UK immigration violations
- Providing false information
- Security concerns
If denied, you may be able to apply for a standard UK visa instead, which involves a more thorough review process including an interview. There is no formal appeal process for ETA refusals.
